This one day 4WD safari takes you from Cairns along the coastal road via Port Douglas to Cooktown and back in one big day of travel and sightseeing! You’ll travel the coastal road in one direction (weather permitting) and the inland road in the other direction. Cooktown is a beautiful, unspoilt, historic town surrounded by stunning countryside, and is Australia’s closest town to the Great Barrier Reef. With its laid-back atmosphere and friendly people it is the perfect place to explore the rugged beauty of the Lower Cape with its pristine environment and rich Aboriginal culture.
Departure Dates: This Cooktown tour departs on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday only from Cairns, Cairns Beaches or Port Douglas hotels. Extra departures might be available in August. Departure and return times are below. The minimum number of people per trip required for the trip to run is 4. The maximum number is 16.

Tour Itinerary:
You will be collected by an air-conditioned four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle. Your tour travels north along the Captain Cook Highway, one of Australia’s most scenic coastal drives towards the World Heritage Listed Daintree National Park. You will cross the Daintree River by cable ferry and journey through this spectacular example of Mother Nature, which contains the highest number of plant and animal species that are rare, or threatened by extinction.
Your experienced guide will enlighten your journey with incredible stories and history as you continue on the 4WD only Bloomfield Track. This 32km track will take you through some of the most spectacular scenery in Australia, crossing rivers and climbing mountain ranges. You will stop for lunch at the famous Lion’s Den Hotel (est. 1875), North Queensland’s oldest running bush pub. You continue to the unique geological oddity, which is Black Mountain, surrounded in mystery and spoken of in ancient Aboriginal legend.
Your tour arrives in Cooktown where you will have an amazing 360 degree view from Grassy Hill. You'll see the vistas of the Coral Sea, the Endeavour River and Cooktown. Have your camera ready! Enjoy a few hours free time to explore Cooktown including the famous museum there. Your 4WD tour then hits the inland road, a sealed highway, the Mulligan Highway, through a diverse landscape of cattle stations, the Palmer River Goldfields where one of Australia's richest gold fields was discovered in 1872. The outback of Far North Queensland offers amazing scenery. Your tour ends at your hotel in Cairns or Port Douglas at between 8.30pm-9.30pm.
If you choose to fly back to Cairns you have an extra few hours to see Cooktown and the flight departs Cooktown at 6pm and flies via the coastline, arriving at 6.50pm to Cairns. This flight has to be pre-booked and is subject to availability. Hotel transfers on arrival at Cairns General Aviation Airport are NOT included, please make your own way to your accommodation. Taxis are available on arrival.
