Cairns and Great Barrier Reef Tours » Falla Reef Cruise (#300)
Type: Tours in Cairns - Sailing Tours to Great Barrier Reef
You might have heard of the legend that is "The Falla" from someone who has been to Cairns in the past twenty years or so. Here is some first hand information regarding its current operation as a sail and snorkel tour to the Great Barrier Reef.
You'll start your sail from Cairns at around 9am after an 8:30am check in. Your destination is a secluded area of the reef (generally not another boat in sight) called Coral Gardens and you all just jump in and enjoy the underwater aquarium!
You'll often see huge fish, bright corals, and even a turtle. Then it is back onto the boat for lunch which usually consists of chicken and other cold meats, a pasta dish and some salads. Vegetarians are also catered for if you mention when you book. You'll then sail to the next destination Upolu Cay - which is a sand cay (island) on the Barrier Reef.
Due to the fact that boats aren't allowed to moore right on the island due to environmental reasons - the Falla is anchored about 20 metres from the sandy cay called Upolu Cay and together with the others on board you'll snorkel together to get to the cay - and see some amazing things along the way.
Those who just want to go along for the sailing are also catered to. The captain takes the non-snorkellers in a small motor boat across to the cay. Once at the cay you can either relax on the sand and sunbake or keep exploring the reef.
After a big day exploring it is back on to the boat for the exciting sail home.
You'll learn about the amazing history of the Falla and how it was once an old pearl lugger and was once rescued from the ocean floor when it sank - many years ago of course.
The crew members walk around with fruit, cheese platters, and wine for everyone on the sail home. There is also an opportunity to do some first hand sailing or you can just relax and soak up some more sun.
A classic Australian Pearl Lugger built in Broome 1956 & traditionally restored, The Falla is one of only a few of these legendary wood sailing ships that now remain. This is the only authentic pearl lugger that sails daily to the Great Barrier Reef and the beautiful Upolu Cay.
