Whitsunday Islands Tours » Reefworld - Great Barrier Reef - Whitsundays (*546)
Type: Tours and Attractions - 1 Day Tours
Formed millions of years ago, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on Earth. It is so large that it can be viewed from outer space. The magnificent structure that curves up the coast of Queensland is made up of 2,900 individual reefs, and we are lucky enough to be able to show two of these colourful, vibrant reef sites to visitors to the Whitsundays!
Our main reef site is called Hardy Reef. We also have a reef site that we take large groups and cruise ship visitors to, called Knuckle Reef Lagoon. They both are home to hundreds of different types of fish and hard and soft coral thrive in their sheltered lagoons. Both reef sites are located alongside coral walls which you will be able to explore either on your own or on guided safaris.
The bright colours and amusing antics of anemone, parrotfish and sometime even turtles and reef sharks, captivate all who explore the underwater world and the range of species that are seen out here never cease to amaze! It is common to see whales enroute (July – September), tusk fish, cuttlefish, morays, barracudas, unicorn fish, surgeonfish, angelfish, starfish, feather stars and much more!
The pontoons at the reef
Tailor made for the reef, our innovative pontoons (one at Hardy Reef and one at Knuckle Reef), have numerous features and activities.
Both pontoons are spacious with a choice of areas to relax and a great range of activities to enhance your time at the reef. There is undercover seating and tables, sun decks for topping up the tan, freshwater showers, change rooms and you have full access to the air-conditioned comfort of our reef vessel.
The pontoons are ideally situated in shallower waters with protection from the surrounding sea conditions. The best coral is a short distance away from the pontoon. Marker buoys and ropes clearly indicate the areas you are free to explore and our staff will be happy to provide directions.
Of course, the highlights are getting into the water to discover what lies beneath. All snorkelling gear is provided, and if you want to see the best of the reef, you can take a guided Reef Safari, or an intro or certified dive!
For those that don't want to get wet, you'll still get to discover the amazing underwater world. The pontoons have spectacular underwater viewing chambers as well as semi-submersible submarines.
There are a range of further activities available including scenic helicopter flights!
